How to use the Pinterest keyword research tool
- 1Type a seed keyword, the way a pinner would search it ("gifts for dad", "small living room ideas"), and pick the country whose searches you want. Ten regions are covered, from the US and UK to Brazil and Mexico.
- 2Read the three lists. Suggested terms are the completions Pinterest offers for your seed, related terms are what people search alongside it, and trending keywords are the ones gaining searches right now.
- 3Note the search-volume range next to each keyword and shortlist the ones that fit your pin: a couple of broad terms for reach, plus two or three specific ones you can realistically rank for.
- 4Make the pins. Each keyword has a link to the pin generator, which turns a blog post, product page or topic into pins built around that keyword, ready to schedule.
Where to put Pinterest keywords
Pinterest is a search engine first, so it reads the words around a pin to decide who sees it. The keywords you shortlist belong in four places:
Pin title
Lead with the main keyword in the first few words. Pinterest shows roughly the first 40 characters of a title in the feed, so "Gifts for Dad: 25 Ideas He Will Use" beats "25 Ideas He Will Use (Gifts for Dad)".
Pin description
Write two or three natural sentences that use the main keyword once and one or two related terms. Keyword lists and hashtags walls do not help; readable sentences that match how people search do.
Board name and description
Name boards after a search term ("Gift Ideas for Him", not "Stuff I Love") and describe them with the related terms. Pinterest reads the board to understand every pin saved to it.
Text on the image
Pinterest reads the overlay text on the pin itself. Put the keyword in the headline on the image, large enough to read on a phone, and keep the rest of the design simple.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Pinterest keyword research tool free?
Yes. It is free with a Ampli account, and you connect your Pinterest account once because the suggestions come from Pinterest's own API, not from a scraped list.
Where does the keyword data come from?
Straight from Pinterest. Suggested terms are the completions Pinterest shows in its search box, related terms are the keywords people search alongside yours, and trending keywords are the searches growing fastest in the region you picked.
What do the search-volume ranges mean?
Pinterest reports monthly search volume as a range rather than an exact number, so a keyword might show 10K–100K monthly searches. Some suggested keywords have no reliable volume data yet; those are marked as unavailable rather than guessed.
How many keywords should one pin target?
One main keyword in the title and the text on the image, and two or three related terms worked naturally into the description. Pins that try to cover ten keywords rank for none of them.
How far ahead should I research seasonal keywords?
About 45 to 60 days before the season. Pinners search for Christmas gifts from October and summer outfits from April, and Pinterest needs a few weeks to index and distribute new pins, so trending terms are most useful when you act on them early.
Can I make pins from these keywords?
Yes. Every keyword links to the Ampli pin generator, which makes pins from a link or topic around that keyword. You can then schedule them to your boards from the same calendar as your other channels.
